South Area Boundary Change Community Forum is Jan. 26

posted Jan 23, 2012 2:20 PM by Salem Keizer
A new elementary school will be opening in South Salem in Fall 2012 on a portion of the former Battle Creek Golf Course property. School attendance area boundaries are being adjusted to create an attendance neighborhood for the new school, and to balance enrollments and relieve overcrowding at existing schools.

A community forum is being held and the public is invited to view the South area boundary change proposal and share feedback.

Elementary schools affected by the boundary change proposal include Lee, Liberty, Pringle, Rosedale and Sumpter. The changes could also affect the middle and high school assignments (Crossler, Judson, Sprague and South Salem High School) for some students. The proposal adds the new elementary school to the Judson Middle School and Sprague High School feeder system.

District staff will consider public input in making a recommendation to the School Board. Boundary adjustments are also being proposed for East Salem. The School Board is scheduled to hear the first reading of both the East and South Boundary Change Proposals at the February 14, 2012 Board meeting, and is scheduled to vote on new school attendance areas on March 13, 2012.

Both new elementary schools are being constructed with funds provided by the $242.1 million construction bond approved by voters in 2008. Bond funds can only be used for renovations, repairs and new school construction projects associated with the bond measure. Bond funds cannot be used for school operations. More information on construction bond projects can be found on the district website under Construction Bond Updates.
