Who is Mrs. Armstrong? Mrs. Armstrong has been an elementary school counselor with Salem-Keizer Public Schools for 9 years. She has worked at Forest Ridge, Auburn, Pringle, and Rosedale Elementary Schools. Prior to her career as a school counselor, Mrs. Armstrong worked for 4 years as a mental health therapist with Community Counseling Center. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Seattle Pacific University with minor degrees in Youth Ministry and French. Mrs. Armstrong went on to receive her Masters of Arts in Counseling from George Fox University. She has known she wanted to be a counselor since 5th grade and volunteered as a camp counselor every summer for 10 years. Mrs. Armstrong has been married 13 ½ years to her husband Brian, who also works for Salem-Keizer Public Schools as a high school history teacher and football coach at South Salem High School. They have a Miniature Schnauzer named Charley whom they rescued in 2009. In her free time, Mrs. Armstrong enjoys reading, writing, traveling, cooking, and spending quality time with family and friends.
What Does a School Counselor Do, Anyway?
§ Provides individual, short-term support § Facilitates small educational support groups when appropriate § Plans and teaches developmentally appropriate classroom guidance lessons § Conferences with parents and teachers § Consults with teachers and other professionals § Serves as a liaison to community resources § Coordinates the Student Services Team (SST) § Works with school personnel, parents, and students during crises § Works to maintain a positive, supportive school environment for everyone § Case Manager for 504 Plans § Attends monthly Counseling Program meetings & trainings § Attends IEP meetings, as needed § Teaches all students problem-solving ideas to help manage conflicts § Coordinates 2nd Steps and Steps to Respect program delivery & support § Guest Writer of Statesman Journal “Ask a Counselor Column” § Listens, helps, encourages and cares about ALL students at Rosedale |
