A new elementary school will be opening in South Salem in Fall 2012 on a portion of the former Battle Creek Golf Course property. School attendance area boundaries are being adjusted to create an attendance neighborhood for the new school, and to balance enrollments and relieve overcrowding at existing schools. A community forum is being held and the public is invited to view the South area boundary change proposal and share feedback. South Area Boundary Change Community ForumThursday, January 26, 2012 Crossler Middle School6:00 p.m. Download a map of proposed South Salem elementary school boundary changes[PDF] Download a map of proposed South Salem middle school boundary changes [PDF] Elementary schools affected by the boundary change proposal include Lee, Liberty, Pringle, Rosedale and Sumpter. The changes could also affect the middle and high school assignments (Crossler, Judson, Sprague and South Salem High School) for some students. The proposal adds the new elementary school to the Judson Middle School and Sprague High School feeder system. District staff will consider public input in making a recommendation to the School Board. Boundary adjustments are also being proposed for East Salem. The School Board is scheduled to hear the first reading of both the East and South Boundary Change Proposals at the February 14, 2012 Board meeting, and is scheduled to vote on new school attendance areas on March 13, 2012. Both new elementary schools are being constructed with funds provided by the $242.1 million construction bond approved by voters in 2008. Bond funds can only be used for renovations, repairs and new school construction projects associated with the bond measure. Bond funds cannot be used for school operations. More information on construction bond projects can be found on the district website under Construction Bond Updates. |

Dear Rosedale Families:
I want to share with you a decision that has been difficult for me. I decided to retire on December 31. Being absent since the beginning of the school year due to medical issues has been a challenge for me. I have truly missed interacting with your children, the staff, and you.
Rosedale is truly a wonderful school. Your partnership with staff, your commitment to your child’s education, and your overwhelming support are to be applauded. This is what makes Rosedale a high achieving school.
Please know that I will always look back at my time as Rosedale’s principal fondly. You have touched my life with your kindness and support. I loved being able to celebrate successes and recognize the talents of your children. Teaching is my passion.
I wish you the best as your children continue their education. Mr. Palacio will remain as Rosedale’s principal until the remainder of the year.
Grateful for the opportunity to be your principal,
Sue Hunt |

An upcoming community forum kicks off the planning process for new school attendance area boundaries in South Salem. School attendance area boundaries must be adjusted to relieve overcrowding in existing schools and define attendance areas for the new elementary school being constructed near Madras Street in South Salem. The new school will be open in fall of 2012.
The community forum is Wednesday, November 9 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Crossler Middle School. Parents, staff, and interested community members are invited to attend.
At the forum, community members will learn about the boundary change work plan, the School Board’s criteria for making boundary changes, review maps and share input and ideas for new and adjusted attendance area boundaries. Another community forum will be held early next year to share proposals developed by a neighborhood work team and gather reactions and input from those attending. New boundaries would be adopted by March 2012 for the 2012-13 school year.
Nominations for the name of the new school are being accepted through November 30, 2011. To access nomination information and forms, please visit www.salemkeizer.org/content/bond-updates, or contact your school office.
Two new elementary schools are currently under construction in Salem-Keizer with funds provided by the $242.1 million construction bond approved by voters in November 2008. Thanks to the community’s support of the bond, our schools will provide safer, healthier, and less crowded learning environments for students. For more information, contact any East Salem school principal, or project coordinator Mike Bednarek at (503) 399-3290. |
